Cap’n Jazz was a big deal to me. Alot of people might not “feel” them, but i think they undeniably were a really big part of the GOOD aspects of the very small emo scene that was awesome. Not only that, but they were kids. I started bands because I heard Cap’n Jazz, knew they were kids like me, and wanted to rock out just as hard as them. They were emotional in not a whiney way, and if it is whiney, its just because Tim Kinsella sings like a wounded bird.
Me and one of my best friends since I was in 5th grade make a band because of how awesome Cap’n Jazz was. We would drive like 35 minutes to another kids house who played guitar, all packed in with ians drums. We had Cap’n jazz on tape and i remember just driving and driving through rural town after rural town totally be absorbed by how great and inspiring we thought their music was. Im pretty young too, so i was sitting there in 1998 thinking about how these guys were making this music in 1990, and how fucking amazing it was compared to everything else I was listening to.
Here are a few tracks of theirs, and a live video (must be pretty rare) of an entire show they did. A must see if you are into them/like the songs at all.

cap’n Jazz was awesome and historic and all but Owls was in my personal opinion the culmination of that sound. Although the Make Believe s/t EP that came out before the actual full length album was wonderful in its own ways.

yea thats true. Alot of people seem to think that American Football was the best project that Kinsella was involved in, but I agree that Owls really takes the cake. cap’n Jazz has a big nostalgia feel for me though, and has a certain place in my life thats more important than owls.
