January 19th is going off with a little bit for everyone. Here is part 2 of our massive post on the artists performing upstairs for Feedback 2 @ Valentine’s. Be sure to visit their websites for more info and samples from these artists. See you then!
I dig their style. I have been writing playing solo acoustic folkpunk type songs since i was little, and its great to see that there is a real resurgence of it, and that kids are actually into it. It seems more and more that the basement show with an intimate crowd isn’t the punk shows anymore (from my personal experiences as of late) but the folkpunk gigs and singer songwriters. Besides, bands with banjos are 100% dope. Influences are Neutral Milk Hotel, and the microphones. I could see that, reminds me of a full backed band paul baribeau, or an iron and wine type thing personally.
Sgt. Dunbar & The Hobo Banned - Goin Nowhere
Bio from their website:
““Veteran Albany folk-rockers knotworking have been sticking closer to the rock side of the equation as of late. Lead knot Ed Gorch is joined by Meg Prokorym on violin and mando, Swamp Baby Nick Matulis on bass and vocals, Mike Hotstain on Telecaster and Uncle Mikulka’s behind on drums. There’s rumor of one final magnum opus/swan song record to be made before 2008 is through.”
Have you ever heard Endless mike and the beagles club? These guys remind me of them a bit, some songs more than others. Ed has a great voice and there is a great blend of instruments. You cant go wrong with a fiddle, honestly. Why isn’t there more fiddle in bloghouse?
Sean Rowe has quite the name locally, and has even recorded one of his albums in the Daily Grind downtown. His website can be found here, and you can purchase any of his albums there too.
He also has a new video out that can be seen here:

Scientific Maps

website bio:
“Scientific Maps is a pseudonym for Albany, N.Y. resident and musician, Aaron Smith, as well as the name of the four-piece band. Scientific Maps started in 2003 as a side project for Smith, the then bass player for Albany band The Stars of Rock. As The Stars ceased functioning, Aaron began concentrating on writing and recording hits for an album with songs reflecting influences as varied as the supernatural and crypto-zoological to British invasion to Sherlock Holmes to Elephant 6 and then back to the supernatural. For the past three years, Aaron has been recording all the instruments himself in his cramped Albany basement most every afternoon and weekend. The final result is a complete album containing 16 original and laboriously fine tuned compositions titled Get off the Moon. The wide variety of instruments (guitar, air organ, theremin, analog drum machine, moog synth, plastic tubing, live drums) combine to create a series of songs imparting on the listener a feeling of floating through space while being chased by the ghost of Jeremy Brett wearing a Who T-shirt.”These guys are great. I’ve seen them a bunch of times either at GZ (www.gzbasement.net) or Valentines. They have come to GZ 2 or 3 times and were totally the highlight of the show. Not only is their music top notch, they are all super nice guys and Aaron is one funny dude. This is one of the few songs i could find from them online, but it doesnt really do justice to how full and tight they sound live.
Scientific Maps - Burning all the Blankets
From Metroland Magazine’s “Best of 2007″ edition:
“We’d like to say that Ashley Pond is the Capital Region’s answer to Cat Power, but that wouldn’t be at all fair: The minimalist, blues-based guitar-and-vocal explorations on Pond’s forthcoming debut disc Dala are far more outgoing. She claims to be influenced by Nick Drake and Led Zeppelin, and we can hear both: Her soulful voice sweeps from sassy purr to assured wail, and her guitar work is intricate and interesting (listen: There’s nary a strum to be heard). A welcome addition to the area’s already bustling singer- songwriter scene.”
Really great voice with stellar guitar playing, a pretty awesome combination. Her music can be heard on her myspace here, I suggest you check it out, especially the track “Shame”.
Sarah Pedinotti

Bio from website:
“Sarah Pedinotti is a songwriter and musician from Saratoga Springs, NY. She has released three albums independently. In 2003 and 2005, Billboard Magazine editor Thom Duffy, who described Pedinotti as “a talented young singer/ songwriter on the rise”, respectively listed her albums “You Go To My Head” and “One Mirror” as top ten best new albums of the year. Pedinotti is one of seven in a family of artists. She began writing, singing and playing piano at an early age, influenced by an eclectic assortment of American and British musicians of the 1960s and 70s (including Dylan, Bowie, The Rolling Stones and The Kinks) In the summer of 1996, her parents opened One Caroline Street, a Jazz Bistro in Saratoga Springs, NY. Sarah began performing there when she was twelve, sitting in with the featured musicians. Over the years she has performed with many artists including members of The Wynton Marsalis Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra: Marcus Printup, Eric Lewis and Ali Jackson. Lee Shaw—a former student of Oscar Peterson’s—frequently played at the bistro and became Sarah’s mentor. Pedinotti’s writing is often described as eclectic. In a recent review of her latest album “City Bird” her music is compared to that of Bruce Springsteen, Jacque Brel, Dr. John and Tom Waits, the reviewer adds “her literate lyrics live in tunes that are more like mini-short stories than mere songs.”
The Bio pretty much says it all. The music matches her voice really well, and her voice is so light and pretty. Her music can be found on her myspace page.
