there was suppose to be five but i lost count.
Rhianna - Umbrella (VNDLSM Remix - Diplo Edit)
i had a dream the other night, one of those rare dreams where you’re not any of the characters in the dream. the dream consisted of an old wrinkly man sitting in front of a television set. television set is revealed to contain images of two figures, one a lady, another a man. both extremely well dressed - dressed as if attending one of those expensive charity dinners the ultra-rich seems suckers for. before i woke up, the dream ended with the old man saying, “congratulations, rhianna, diplo.” this remix-edit hasn’t left my rotation for a while now.
Metro Area - Miura (Re-edit)
the only time i experienced a “dream-in-a-dream” sequence, is one where i woke up from a falling dream, then after collecting myself and getting out of bed, i fell through the non-existing floor, to be awoken again, after several iteration of this i eventually woke up for real. this re-edit of miura reminds of that dream, and the feeling of falling over and over again without ever landing. it manages to hold on to that build-up part of the track the entire duration of the song without ever letting you land.
Dada Life - Big Time (Linus Loves Remix)
i’ve been told that if you play tetris for an extended period of time before going to bed, one has dreams of falling blocks and tetris patterns. i’ve never experienced this myself but i’d imagine if there’d be a sound track to such a dream this would be it.
Shinichi Osawa ft. Princess Superstar - Detonator
one of the weirdest dream i’ve ever had was one where i was being chased by that undisputed king of emo - trent reznor, through a complex of dirt-floored rooms divided by rice paper doors. he had these scary long nails painted black while the rooms had hands in various stages of decay protruding from the ground. it was scarier than it sounds on paper. oh yeah, shinichi osawa is awesome, and he’s teamed up here with princess superstar, a one time kool keith collaborator and doing that dirty white girl rap years before amanda blank. maybe it’s just that this song reminds me of white lines but, i’m fairly sure this is a good track on its own.
Shinichi Osawa ft. Au Revoir Simone - Star Guitar
my favorite dreams of childhood are ones where i’m riding an insect of some kind through vastness of a grassy field or a forest (i’ve had many such dreams than i care to admit). “honey i shrunk the kids” has a special place in my heart for this reason, being a visual realization of a dream (literally). this remake of chemical brother’s “star guitar” gives me that similar feeling of riding through a vastness of something.. or nothing.
Kylie Minogue - 2 Hearts (Gaetan Remix)
i’ve never dreamt about love or kylie minogue. this track is a booty shaker.
Dre Skull - I Want You Back
the most memorable dream that i ever had was structured like a strange loop. meaning the time line of the dream was a loop where the beginning of the dream eventually was sequentially followed by the events that followed it. while in the dream my character wasn’t fully aware of this, i was at the same time in the dream aware of it as an omniscient observer outside the events of the dream - simultaneous existing within the dream world and outside it. this is a reworking of a classic jackson 5 song. i would love to hate it for the fact that it’s such an obvious choice to sample, but, i love it. such are the paradoxes of life and dreams.
VHS or Beta - Burn It All Down (Surkin Remix)
right before my mom found out she was pregnant with me she had this dream where three tigers were in front of her. then all of a sudden the middle one jumped up at her before waking up. my aunt has all kinds of theories about what it means. i forget them now. back from japan recommended this track last night and since then i’ve listened to it no less than 10 times.
The Diplomats - Dipset Anthem (Raziek Booty Remix)
i’ve heard some nerdy academic dream researchers say that dreams are chance combinations of disparate memory fragments into something of a coherent narrative which helps in memory formation. we often remember much more vividly, events/things that are strange or out of the ordinary. dipset anthem, imho, was one of the weakest tracks on diplomatic immunity. i include this remix because it makes me like something that i didn’t like in its original form. i like surprises.
